MONTESSORI MOTHERS

A 6-Week Mobile Curriculum from MoW

The Montessori Mothers Program is a six-week, community-based caregiver education initiative delivered by Montessori on Wheels (MoW). The program equips mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers with culturally responsive Montessori-based knowledge and practical skills — brought directly to their communities.

Rooted in African wisdom and grounded in current research in early childhood education, the program empowers caregivers to nurture independence, curiosity, and respect in children aged 0–15, integrating cultural traditions and everyday practical life experiences.

CAREGIVERS, VOLUNTEERS, & COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Who This Program is For

This program is designed for mothers and grandmothers caring for children ages 0–15, community caregivers and crèche helpers, Early Childhood Development (ECD) volunteers, and the facilitators who bring it to life across communities. It also offers partners and funders a clear picture of how the program is designed, delivered, and what it aims to achieve.

YOU ARE ALREADY A TEACHER

Honoring the Wisdom Caregivers Already Hold

Every meal you prepare, every story you tell, and every chore you share with your child is a lesson. This program doesn't ask caregivers to start from scratch. Instead, it gives them a new language for what they already know, plus a few new tools to bring home and use every day.

THE SIX WEEK JOURNEY

Each 90-minute session blends Montessori principles with African traditions and everyday practical life, using simple, low-cost materials caregivers can recreate at home.

What Each Week Covers

WEEK ONE

Foundations of Montessori & African Wisdom

This week introduces Maria Montessori's core principles, respect for the child, independence, and the prepared environment, alongside the spirit of Ubuntu. Caregivers reflect on how their own parenting traditions already embody these values.

WEEK TWO

Practical Life Skills in the Home

Everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, gardening, and caring for siblings become powerful learning moments. Caregivers practice presenting tasks like pouring or washing in a slow, child-centered way that builds independence and confidence.

WEEK THREE

This week connects Montessori sensorial learning with local games, songs, and storytelling traditions. Caregivers make their own low-cost sensorial tools, like texture boards and smell jars, and explore early literacy in both English and local languages.

Sensorial Exploration & Early Literacy

3

Using beans, maize kernels, and everyday household items, caregivers explore Montessori's hands-on approach to math, moving from concrete objects to abstract numbers. Everyday activities like measuring food or counting goats become natural math lessons.

WEEK FOUR

Mathematics & Logical Thinking

4

WEEK FIVE

This session takes learning outdoors with a community nature walk. Caregivers explore Montessori observation and classification skills alongside indigenous knowledge of plants, animals, and the land, and practice recording findings together.

WEEK SIX

Storytelling, Culture & Global Citizenship

Caregivers explore the power of traditional storytelling to teach values like honesty, community, and courage. Each caregiver practices sharing a story, and the group reflects on the lessons and cultural values within it.

CLOSING CELEBRATION

Honoring Growth, Community, and Culture

The program ends with a community celebration that includes reflection, caregiver sharing, certificates of participation, and traditional song, dance, and storytelling. It's a joyful moment of recognition for everyone who took part.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

What Makes This Program Different

Every session is built on Ubuntu, the idea that we grow through one another. Caregivers are treated as holders of generational wisdom, and Montessori principles are woven into what families already know rather than presented as something new from outside. The curriculum stays flexible to fit each community's space, size, and language, and every activity uses low-cost materials families already have at home. Sessions are delivered in Shona, Ndebele, or English, drawing on local stories and proverbs throughout.
